FAQ

Frequently asked questions.

What is asbestos abatement and when is it required?

Asbestos abatement is the controlled removal, repair, or encapsulation of asbestos-containing materials to prevent the release of hazardous fibres into the air. It is required when asbestos-containing materials are damaged, deteriorating, or will be disturbed during renovation, maintenance, or demolition activities, in accordance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code.

How do you verify an area is safe after asbestos removal?

ESP conducts visual inspections and clearance air testing to confirm that no visible debris remains and airborne fibre levels meet acceptable limits. Final clearance is documented in accordance with the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code before the area is approved for re-occupancy.

What is industrial/occupational hygiene and how can it help my facility?

Industrial/occupational hygiene is the practice of identifying, assessing, and controlling workplace hazards such as airborne contaminants, noise, and chemical exposures that may impact worker health. It helps your facility maintain regulatory compliance, reduce exposure risks, and implement effective controls through monitoring, hazard assessments, and practical recommendations.

How often should we conduct exposure monitoring for workers?

Exposure monitoring should be conducted whenever there is potential for hazardous exposure, such as during new processes, changes in materials or equipment, asbestos or lead remediation or when required by the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code. Routine monitoring may also be scheduled periodically based on the level of risk and prior assessment results to ensure ongoing compliance and worker safety.

What does an indoor air quality (IAQ) assessment include?

An IAQ assessment typically involves a site inspection, evaluation of ventilation systems, and measurement of airborne contaminants such as mould spores, dust, and chemical pollutants. It may also include temperature, humidity, and airflow assessments, along with laboratory analysis of collected samples when required. Findings are documented with recommendations to improve air quality and ensure compliance with your local regulations.

What is a hazardous materials assessment and when is it needed?

It’s a pre-renovation/demolition survey to identify and locate hazardous building materials like asbestos, lead, PCBs, mercury, ozone-depleting substances, and crystalline silica. Most jurisdictions require this before any work that could disturb these materials.

How do you assess and manage mould and microbial concerns?

Mould and microbial concerns are assessed through a detailed visual inspection, moisture evaluation, and targeted air and surface sampling where necessary to determine the type and extent of contamination. Laboratory analysis confirms microbial levels, followed by a risk-based interpretation of findings. Management recommendations are then provided, including moisture control, remediation procedures, and post-remediation verification to ensure safe indoor conditions.

Can our building remain occupied during assessments or abatement?

Yes, in many cases buildings can remain occupied during assessments, as sampling and inspections are typically non-intrusive and managed to minimize disruption. During abatement, occupancy depends on the type of materials, extent of work, and control measures in place. High-risk activities involving asbestos or other hazardous materials may require isolation of work areas or temporary evacuation to meet requirements under the Alberta Occupational Health and Safety Code. Contact ESP to evaluate your project and determine safe occupancy conditions.
